let's pretend happy end

For six months I dealt Baccarat in a casino.
For six months I played Brahms in a mall.
For six months I arranged museum dioramas;
my hands were too small for the Paleolithic
and when they reassigned me to lichens, I quit.
I type ninety-one words per minute, all of them
Help. Yes, I speak Dewey Decimal.
I speak Russian, Latin, a smattering of Tlingit.
I can balance seven dinner plates on my arm.
All I want to do is sit on a veranda while
a hard rain falls around me. I'll file your 1099s.
I'll make love to strangers of your choice.
I'll do whatever you want, as long as I can do it
on that veranda. If it calls you, it's your calling,
right? Once I asked a broker what he loved
about his job, and he said Making a killing.
Once I asked a serial killer what made him
get up in the morning, and he said The people.
wherein we play at profundity.

I have been taking an extended IJ break, because life.

But Jesus, someone please read this. If you like Doctor Who, and you liked Donna, and you loved Wilf, and you felt in your heart that he was given the short end of the stick. If you miss Ten and are okay with Eleven and need some fucking closure, then please click the link, because if I do not share it with someone, I will actually self-destruct.

Obliged.

DISCLAIMER: This is honest curiosity. My tact is sparse enough where I can't be arsed to subtly needle at people.

Posting this because of the following:

a) I am still considered relatively new to The Wonderful World of IJ RP, and so I don't know how everything works.
b) My RP social graces are largely nonexistent, other than "read the rules", "don't write other peoples' shit without consent", "don't be an outrageous dick" and "try to write your best".
c) I would genuinely like some insight, since at the end of the day I am like the hillbilly cousin of IJ RP; I don't know which fork to use when you invite me to a fancy dinner, and will probably just wind up eating in the staff kitchen.

Gates has seen a surge of traffic. (Thank you, Julie!) This is awesome. I have been seeing some concept docs float around. This is equally awesome, admittedly because I am a voyeur who enjoys cracking open others' skulls like pinatas to see what delicious ideas lay inside. That said, the docs I've seen thus far seem less like 'this is what I have ideas for and how I want to implement said ideas', and more like invitations between existing cohorts. On the other hand, I know that I can't be privy to what everyone is doing and how they're going about it (my creeper skills are good, but not that good). So am I missing something? Am I not seeing the bits where folks are looking over existing characters in-game and going 'okay, I want to work with x', or 'y gives me a thought to do z'? Or are these docs just being used as comfort blankets where we-already-know-each-other folks can ease their way into things and not feel adrift?

I understand that new games can be intimidating, and I get that RPers are generally more comfortable in cliques. But I'm also used to sitting in the corner and building my own Lego castle before sharing it with the world, thus the idea of CDJs and concept docs and all that is still relatively new to me. So can anyone clarify on whether I have a totally skewed interpretation, or if perhaps the intent was one thing and the reality just drifted several degrees starboard? My concern is that this has the potential to limit people -- stick with what you know, don't look too far elsewhere and thus possibly miss out on things you may not have otherwise considered. Not to mention the weirdness which goes on when the docs become public and RPers go 'oh shit, you wanted this PB? Me, too; nevermind!'

Don't get me wrong; I have my own concept doc. Most of you have seen it. (And if you haven't but would like to, please let me know. I am hypocrite enough to enjoy sharing.) But nothing about it is concrete until I actually get off my ass and app the character, you know? At least one of the PBs I had in mind has been claimed by another writer. Meh, so it goes. And while I v. much enjoy feedback -- I think a couple of in-game (fun!) shenanigans have occurred because of sharing it out -- it's really only for me to poke at, and for everyone else to enjoy as so much popcorn cinema. If you take something away from it, kudos. Rock that casbah. Just don't think it's set in stone until the ink is actually dry. Or is that only me?

ETA: Further thought is, okay, I get that there's still the OOC intro post where you say 'hi, game!' and game says 'HI, YOU!', and things develop off of that. An added question would then be 'how much do you rely upon that intro post and what comes of it, as compared to what you've already plotted out with RPers you know/have shared out to?'

[Plus added awesome, just to remind everyone that I care.]

I feel better about the world when I get to add a Hellblazer quote to my game premise. Particularly when said quote discusses petty vengeance, purchasing baby's blood and fucking zombies.

Remember, kids: If you bring a fluffy bunny into Gates!world, my role as mod is to see it is eaten, then shat back out as Monty Python's killer rabbit.

PBs To Be Used

The great big list of PBs which I mean to use, as well as those which I've used, loved and am tracking. Strike-throughs are PBs which I've used and am not invested in utilizing again. Asterisks are note-to-self that icons will probably be a bitch.
